Actress, writer and broadcaster Vanessa Miles took centre stage to entertain more than 100 WI members at the Mountfitchet Group's annual get together.

Elsenham WI played host to the WI's of Berden, Manuden, Stansted and Ugley.
Guest speaker Vanessa, who comes from a famous theatrical family – her brother Christopher is a film director and her actress sister Sarah was nominated for an Oscar in 1971 for playing the lead in Ryan's Daughter – talked about Celebrity, Celebrations and Going for Gold.

She entertained everyone with her perspective on the cult of celebrity as well as stories of her own celebrity encounters.

The group heard about "the time Robert Mitchum came to supper" as well as when Vanessa, then a prefect at Benenden boarding school in Kent, reprimanded a young Princess Anne for running in the corridor.
Later Ugley WI members presented a comic view of a WI committee meeting from times past. It was based on a 1970s script for a play found in their archives.

A vote of thanks was given by Stansted WI.

Moyra Jackson, president of Elsenham WI, said: "It was wonderful to welcome over 100 ladies to Elsenham from the Mountfitchet Group.

"The evening's highlight had to be our speaker, Vanessa Miles, who kept us entertained with fabulous anecdotes and observations."
